Digimon Get Back (デジモンゲットバック Dejimon Getto Bakku?) is a one-shot manga published in Digimon Comic, about a boy who refused to become a DigiDestined.
Plot
Five children are chosen as DigiDestined and receive Digivices and a mission to save the Digital World. However, one of them, Taro Osanai, refuses the call and stays on Earth.
Twenty-five years later, none of them have returned. The children were declared dead and the searches for them dropped after one year. A funeral was held, and Osanai attended. Osanai has held a regret about refusing the call, and felt the most guilt about never being blamed by any of the grown-ups. Since that day, he has been unable to let others down, which has resulted in him often having to work overtime to solve his team's problems in his job as a manager. Osanai's past self from that fateful day occasionally talks back to the adult Osanai. One night, Osanai is returning from overtime work and argues with his past self about burden and responsibility. The child Osanai asks if he can't just quit like that day, which causes the adult Osanai to snap and declare he doesn't want to ever do that again, or even think about it. The child Osanai then points at someone collapsed in the alley for the adult Osanai to help. Osanai approaches and finds Akira Matsukita, one of the DigiDestined who has not aged since that day, and Elecmon.
The next day, Akira wakes up in a hotel room. After informing her how long it has been and them being legally dead, Osanai asks what has happened to them. Akira reveals the DigiDestined have lost. They were summoned to solve a crisis about a dark fog that was swallowing the Digital World. The DigiDestined learned they needed to gather the power of the Ten Legendary Warriors by unlocking DigiKeys within themselves. The DigiDestined needed to put the keys into a holy altar, which was supposed to clear the fog, but they were one DigiKey short, which allowed the Dark King to defeat them. Osanai collapses into crying from the guilt.
Akira looks out of the window to see how Tokyo changed, and is shocked after seeing Edo Castle, which was supposed to have burned down. She realizes history has changed because of an explosion during the DigiDestined's raid on Clockmon Tower. Akira asks Osanai to look for his Digivice to help her return to the Digital World because her Digivice alone isn't enough. Despite half-believing what's happening, Osanai agrees because them defeating the Dark King will allow the DigiDestined to return home to their families. SkullSatamon, one of the Dark King's underlings, finds them and Elecmon digivolves to Runnermon to fight him. Seeing the battle, Osanai realizes the danger of the world he has been running away from. Akira tells Osanai to find his Digivice, and despite hesitating, he runs home. Osanai questions why he is running away while a young child is fighting fearlessly.
At home, Osanai can't find his Digivice. His young self asks why he's so desperate when he can just run away and can't do anything because he doesn't have a partner Digimon. Osanai tells about how he has been living in a safe world while the others were fighting while stuck in young bodies, and despite it being 25 years too late, he resolves that he has to go now. The young Osanai reveals himself to be Agumon, Osanai's partner Digimon who has been waiting for the day he could entrust him the Digivice again. After a tearful meeting, Osanai takes the Digivice and a DigiKey comes out from it.
SkullSatamon has overpowered Elecmon, and taunts Akira about believing Osanai will return. Akira reaffirms her belief in him, and as SkullSatamon is about to deal a killing blow, Agumon attacks him. SkullSatamon laughs at Osanai for returning, which irritates Agumon, who has watched his daily struggles for the past 25 years. Due to Agumon's words, Osanai feels power welling up in the DigiKey of Courage. Akira remembers AncientGreymon's words about the final DigiKey requiring a fearful heart willing to take the first steps to overcome fear, and realizes what that meant. Agumon warp digivolves to Dinomon. Afraid of Dinomon, SkullSatamon tries to bribe Osanai by asking the Dark King to use his time powers to allow the man to do over anything he might regret. Osanai declares he'll start the do over now by defeating him. Dinomon destroys SkullSatamon and opens a hole in the sky, leading to the Digital World. Akira asks for him to go with her so they can gather all the DigiKeys. Osanai, who is vanishing, realizes the time paradox: His future, where the DigiDestined don't come home, doesn't connect to the Digital World. He points at Edo Castle disappearing as evidence the other DigiDestined are also fighting. Osanai gives his DigiKey to Akira and says goodbye, confident they'll meet again.
Osanai wakes up in the subway train earlier in the same day, thinking it was a dream until he sees Agumon by his side. Agumon tells Osanai's memory from the previous timeline was restored to him by the Digivice after he reached the same age. As the two approach home, Osanai's daughter, Tomori, exclaims to her mother, Akira, about their return. Osanai tears up of happyness when he sees Akira, and reunites with his family.
